The lakes are part of the North Slope Recreation Area on Pikes Peak and will open for the season on April They will have good water levels to begin the fishing season. They hold rainbows, cutthroats, mackinaw and a few brook trout. Fishing pressure has been relatively light the past few years, and both lakes have some larger, holdover trout. If you are starting your woodland garden from scratch then make a small copse of trees – plant 3 or 4 small trees close together maybe acers, rowan, holly or crab apple and a hawthorn which will provide shelter for small animals and birds as well as berries for food. Fishing for wild trout has become a passion for me. It has taken me to many of the State’s Class 1 WTMAs (Wild Trout Management Areas) as well as nameless brooks most fishermen wouldn’t give a second look. Sure, I love the Farmington, and you’ll find me there an awful lot.   Trout can and will feed in bright sunlight if they are not disturbed and food is present. So pay attention to shaded areas of a small stream, but also keep an eye on current threads and where food is drifting. Shade does amplify the possibility of trout being in a spot if the main current threads pass through the shade.

There was a cactus plant off to the side of the porch, and a small shed (garage?) out front. That house has quite a presence. It’s very intense, and not just because it’s the Trout house. It’s definitely unique and I suppose what adds to its aura is the fact that it’s so out-of-place compared to most homes in the area.   The spring trout lily (Erythronium americanum) is one of several native perennial wildflowers blooming now in the Native Plant Garden. Its flowers appear in sunny patches in the forest woodland area. At the base of each plant are its telltale leaves—speckled, elongated, and looking like brown brook trout.
